What to Wear for Family Photos: A Stress-Free Guide

One of the most common questions I get before a session is: “What should we wear?”
Here’s the good news: you don’t need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe or stress over the perfect palette. A few simple tips can help you feel confident, comfortable, and totally camera-ready.

1. Start with one outfit you love.
Pick one person (usually mom!) and build the rest of the family’s outfits around that. Choose something you feel good in—soft neutrals, flowy dresses, or a favorite knit. If you feel great, it shows.

2. Stick to soft, coordinating colors.
Neutrals, earth tones, and muted colors tend to photograph beautifully and won’t distract from the connection in your photos. You don’t need to match—just aim for tones that complement each other (think: warm beige, dusty blue, soft olive, oatmeal, cream).

3. Keep patterns simple and accessories minimal.
Avoid bold logos or busy prints, but don’t be afraid of subtle textures like linen, waffle knit, or a light floral. Layers (like a cardigan or scarf) can add visual interest without overwhelming.

4. Prioritize comfort, especially for the kids.
If they’re tugging at tags or uncomfortable in stiff clothes, it’ll be hard to relax. Choose outfits they can move and snuggle in, and bring backup options if you’re unsure.

5. Ask for help if you need it.
I’m always happy to give input on outfit choices before your session. You can send me photos or lay everything out and snap a quick picture. I’m here to help it feel easy.

At the end of the day, the best outfit is one that helps you focus on your family—not on adjusting collars or smoothing fabric. So wear what makes you feel like you, and let the love do the rest.

Pro Tip: Wait to get babies and young toddlers dressed until you arrive! The quickest way to ensure a blowout is to put your baby in their best photoshoot outfit and stick them in the car. Unfortunately, it works every time!
