Mommy & Me Studio Session in Salem, OR | Hillsboro Family Photographer

There’s just something about photographing a mama and her baby that always gets me, but this session felt especially close to my heart.

I’ve known this sweet friend for years, but it’s motherhood that really brought us together in a deeper way. Our girls are only five months apart, and walking through so many of the same stages side by side has been such a gift. There’s something really special about having someone who just gets it—the highs, the hard days, and everything in between. I’ve loved loving on her little girl and learning from her as we navigate this season together.

We kept this session super simple in the best way. Both of them wore neutral denim, which I absolutely loved. It felt timeless and easy, and it kept the focus right where it should be: on them and their connection. No distractions, just love.

We shot at Studio 22, which is a beautiful natural light studio in Salem, OR. This space is called the playroom, which is honestly perfect for little ones. It’s cozy, full of soft light, and gives just enough room for movement and play without feeling overwhelming.

And with a one-year-old, movement is everything. Instead of traditional posing, I guided them with little prompts: snuggle her close, sway back and forth, walk together, play a bit. Things that feel natural and keep a toddler engaged. It wasn’t about getting her to “sit and smile,” but about letting her be exactly who she is right now.

Those in-between moments are always my favorite anyway. The way she reaches for her mama, the little giggles, the quiet cuddles… all the tiny things that make this stage so fleeting and so beautiful.

Sessions like this are such a good reminder that it doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. Simple outfits, natural light, and just being together—that’s where the magic is.

I’ll never get over how special it is to freeze these moments in time, especially for people I love.

Why Studio Motherhood Sessions Are So Special

Studio sessions create a calm, distraction-free space where the focus is entirely on your connection. I love to use Studio 22 in Salem, Oregon, as well as Satori Collective in Sherwood, Oregon.

With soft light, neutral tones, and a relaxed environment, these sessions allow for:

  • genuine interaction
  • timeless, emotive images
  • a slower, more intentional experience

Motherhood sessions are less about perfect poses and more about the way your child reaches for you, the way you hold them, and the little moments that often go undocumented.

When to Book a Mommy & Me Session

Motherhood sessions can be done at any stage—there’s no “perfect” time.

Some of the most popular times include:

  • baby milestone stages (6–12 months)
  • toddler years
  • seasonal sessions (especially spring / Mother’s Day)

Studio sessions are especially great year-round since they aren’t dependent on weather.
