If you live in Oregon, you already know—rain is part of the lifestyle.
And instead of being something to avoid, it can actually add so much beauty, mood, and authenticity to your session when you’re open to embracing it.
I’m always willing to shoot in the rain, and honestly, some of my favorite images have come from those cloudy, misty, softly drizzling days that Oregon and the Willamette Valley does so well. When clients lean into the weather instead of fighting it, the experience shifts in the best way.
For families with little ones, rain can turn into something really fun. Grab a pair of rain boots, let the kids jump in puddles, and suddenly the session feels less like a photoshoot and more like a memory in the making. Those puddle stomping moments? They’re always a hit. The laughter, the movement, the spontaneity—it all translates beautifully in photos.
In many cases, you can’t even tell it’s raining in the final images. The overcast skies create a soft, even light that’s incredibly flattering, and the slightly moody backdrop that comes with rainy weather gives the photos that classic Oregon feel—cozy, rich, and full of atmosphere.
For a lot of moms, the biggest hesitation around rainy sessions is hair and makeup—and that’s completely understandable. One simple way to elevate your look while also being practical is to incorporate a wide brim hat. It not only adds a polished, styled element to your outfit, but it also helps protect your hair from the rain so you can feel more comfortable and confident throughout the session.
I also always bring a clear umbrella to sessions. It’s available for use in photos, but it’s also helpful in between prompts to keep you dry and protect your hair and makeup. It’s one of those simple tools that can make the experience feel much more relaxed.
And just like any family session, we can always take breaks as needed. If little ones (or parents!) need a moment to warm up, we can pause and step into the car for a bit before heading back out. For families with kids, bringing a thermos of hot cocoa is a great idea—it gives them something cozy to look forward to and can help keep spirits high if the weather feels a bit chilly.
Rain doesn’t have to mean rescheduling or missing out on beautiful photos. In fact, it can be an opportunity to create something unique, cozy, and completely true to the Oregon experience.
So if the forecast shows a little drizzle, don’t stress it. Lean into it. Some of the most memorable sessions happen when we stop waiting for perfect weather and start embracing the moment exactly as it is.
