What to Expect During Your Lifestyle Newborn Session | Hillsboro & Portland Newborn Photographer

If you’re planning a newborn session and wondering what it’s actually like, you’re in the right place. As a Hillsboro, Oregon newborn photographer serving the greater Portland metro, my goal is to make your experience feel relaxed, natural, and completely stress-free.

Whether your session takes place at the studio in Sherwood, Oregon or in your home, here’s everything you need to know about how to prepare and what to expect.

How to Prepare for Your Newborn Session

A little preparation helps your session go smoothly and keeps baby happy and comfortable.

Here are my top tips:

  • Feed baby right before you leave (or plan to feed when you arrive if you have a long drive)
  • Dress baby in a simple outfit for the drive
    • We’ll change them once you arrive to avoid spit-ups or blowouts on the way
  • Bring only the essentials:
    • Outfits for baby
    • Feeding supplies (bottles, burp cloths, etc.)
    • Pacifier (if baby uses one)
    • A special blanket or sentimental item (optional)

If you’re bringing a toddler or older sibling, I always recommend packing a few snacks. This can make a big difference during sibling photos!

Arriving at the Studio in Sherwood, Oregon

If your session is taking place at the studio in Sherwood, Oregon, here are a few important details:

  • Please plan to arrive a few minutes early
  • Studio time is not flexible, so we’ll begin right at your scheduled time
  • You’ll wait outside until I come to unlock the studio
  • We’ll enter together right at the start of your session

There is a bathroom available once inside, and we’ll take a few minutes to get you settled and comfortable before we begin.

What Happens During a Lifestyle Newborn Session

Every session is completely baby-led, which means we follow your baby’s needs the entire time. I allow up to 2 hours for your session so we can move at a calm, flexible pace.

Here’s what a typical session looks like:

1. Settling In & Getting Started

Once you arrive, you’ll have time to:

  • Change baby into their outfit
  • Feed or top them off if needed

If baby is content, we’ll start with:

  • Detail photos (tiny fingers, toes, lashes)
  • A few simple, natural images of baby in their outfit
  • A couple family photos

2. Feeding & Soothing Break

We’ll pause whenever baby needs it, which is almost always at least once! We typically do this right after those detail shots.

This break allows baby to:

  • Fully feed
  • Relax and settle
  • Get sleepy for those classic newborn images

3. Swaddled & Sleepy Photos

After feeding, I’ll gently:

  • Swaddle and wrap baby (swaddle and your choice of wrap are provided by me)
  • Help them feel cozy and secure

This is when we capture those soft, squishy, sleepy newborn images you love.

If baby needs extra time, more feeding, or cuddles, we simply pause. There’s no rush.

What to Wear for Your Newborn Photos

Choosing outfits doesn’t have to be stressful. The goal is a soft, timeless look that keeps the focus on your connection.

  • Stick to neutral tones and earthy colors
  • Choose soft textures and simple fabrics
  • Coordinate, don’t match
  • Avoid bold patterns and logos

You can keep it cozy and casual or dress things up a bit—both photograph beautifully. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident.

A Relaxed, Baby-Led Experience

Newborn sessions with me are never rushed or overly posed. Your baby sets the pace, and we take breaks whenever needed—for feeding, soothing, or simply snuggling.

Serving families across Hillsboro, Sherwood, Beaverton, and the greater Portland area, I’ve designed these sessions to feel calm, supportive, and easy—especially during those early newborn days.
