If youโre looking for a relaxed, baby-led newborn session near Beaverton, this recent session at Satori Collective is the perfect example of how beautiful (and realistic!) these moments can be.
This sweet family welcomed their second baby, and getting to document this season felt extra special. Mama is actually a close friend of mine. Watching her step into life as a mom of two, while her toddler gets ready to turn two (such a big milestone!), made this session even more meaningful.
A Real-Life Newborn Session with a Toddler
Letโs be honest, adding a toddler to a newborn session can feel a little unpredictable. And thatโs exactly how this session started.
Big sister wasnโt super interested in photos at first, which is completely normal. Toddlers have their own timelines, moods, and ideas, and I always follow their lead.
Instead of forcing poses or pushing through resistance, we took a more flexible, lifestyle approach:
- We paused when needed
- Switched things up when something wasnโt working
- Followed her cues the entire time
Because at the end of the day, a happy toddler = better photos for everyone.
Teamwork Makes the Session Work
Dad was the MVP during this session. While I focused on baby and mama, he was on full toddler dutyโplaying, running around, and keeping things light and fun so she didnโt get bored or overwhelmed.
This is something I always reassure parents about: you donโt have to do it all at once. We can tag-team.
At one point, big sister really wanted mamaโs attention. So instead of trying to convince her otherwise, we simply pivoted and dad held the baby while she got her moment with mom.
Those little adjustments make such a big difference in keeping the session calm and enjoyable.
My Approach to Toddler + Newborn Sessions
When toddlers are involved, my goal is always connection over perfection.
I donโt believe in overly stiff posing or forcing moments that donโt feel natural. Instead, I guide families through simple prompts that feel more like play than โposing.โ
If a toddler isnโt into something? We move on. No pressure.
Some of my go-to strategies include:
- Turning prompts into games
- Letting toddlers move freely
- Capturing in-between moments instead of โperfectโ poses
- Giving them space when they need it
And youโd be surprised how many beautiful images come from these in-between, unplanned moments.
Tips for a Smooth Newborn Session with a Toddler
If youโre planning a newborn session and have a toddler at home, here are a few things I always recommend:
1. Bring snacks (non-messy ones!)
Snacks can be a total game changer for keeping energy up and moods steady.
2. Pack a favorite toy or comfort item
Something familiar can help toddlers feel more relaxed in a new environment.
3. Keep expectations flexible
Your toddler doesnโt need to โperformโ for the camera. Weโll work around them.
4. Trust the process
Even if it feels a little chaotic in the moment, I promise there is so much magic happening in between.
Why I Love Shooting at Satori Collective in Sherwood
The studio space at Satori Collective is perfect for lifestyle newborn sessions. With its soft natural light and minimal, cozy feel, it creates a calm environment for both babies and toddlers.
Itโs also a convenient option for families coming from Beaverton and the greater Portland metro area who want a studio setting without sacrificing that relaxed, in-home feel.
You Donโt Need Perfect, You Just Need Real
This session is such a good reminder that things donโt have to go perfectly to be meaningful.
There were pauses, play breaks, and plenty of toddler-led moments, and thatโs exactly what made it special.
If youโre worried about how your toddler might do during a newborn session, just know: Iโve got you. Weโll go at their pace, keep things fun, and create space for real connection.
And in the end, youโll walk away with a gallery full of moments that feel like your family.
